Logline
The story is set in the early 2010s in a small town near the sea in southern China. In her late 30s, Ann Zhang is unmarried and has worked at a straw factory for the past 20 years. Her life is plain, but everything changes when she meets Yang on the beach one day. They change each other in ways they never expected through their time together.
Artistic Statement
The story mainly focuses on how Ann starts from being shy and liking the steady life to growing into someone brave enough to take action to change her life. All these changes come from Yang, who is completely the opposite of her. Yang has given Ann a new perspective on the world and encouraged her to see her own. Yang is the mentor to the heroine in the story, an omniscient character, and a metaphor for Venus. Yang can be the avatar of all the inspirational women. Ann can be seen as all lost females who are afraid to change. This is a personal story to me, yet to all the women.
This story centers on female characters. To make a statement that women can do what they wish no matter their age. Female characters in films need to be reinvented. Women at any age stage can be more than just moms tied to the family. She can be as accessible as she wants, choose her life, and take action. She doesn’t have to decide between family, career, or love. She can take control and decide what she wants only if she needs to. Ann or Yang is not bound by the morals that society has enforced on women. Making changes is easy. Having the courage to make changes is what is hard.
